Pioneers of Hydraulics

Hydraulics as we know it today is based on the ideas and inventions of visionary engineers from the past. In our series “Pioneers of Hydraulics,” we explore the life works of these thinkers and their significance for the industry. William George Armstrong is one of them. His groundbreaking inventions have significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of hydraulic systems and driven the Industrial Revolution forward.

The STAUFF Blog is dedicated to the pioneers of hydraulics and their groundbreaking achievements. Today, William George Armstrong, a 19th-century engineer and innovator, takes centre stage. His trailblazing inventions, particularly the weight accumulator, continue to shape modern hydraulics.

The Life of William George Armstrong

William George Armstrong was born on 26 November 1810 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Although he initially pursued a career as a lawyer, his passion for physics and mathematics soon led him to take an interest in technical challenges.

In the 1840s, Armstrong began investigating the use of water power and developed early hydraulic systems. His achievements earned him numerous accolades and a knighthood in 1877. Armstrong's workshops and factories were among the most advanced of their time and are considered pioneers of industrial manufacturing.

Armstrong's Technical Achievements

Armstrong's ingenuity lay in his ability to solve complex technical challenges. He developed machines and systems that made industrial processes more efficient.

One of his most notable innovations was the hydraulic crane, which revolutionised the lifting and moving of heavy loads. However, his most significant invention was the weight accumulator, a device that could efficiently store and release hydraulic energy as needed. This groundbreaking development laid the foundation for many applications that are indispensable in modern technology.

The Weight Accumulator

Developed by Armstrong in 1850, the weight accumulator is a milestone in the history of engineering. The principle is both ingenious and simple: a cylinder filled with fluid is weighted down with a heavy weight. When fluid is pumped into the cylinder, it raises the weight and stores potential energy. This energy can then be released in a controlled manner.

The weight accumulator was later used in industries such as hydraulic presses, lifts, and hoists. Armstrong's invention made it possible to make hydraulic systems more powerful and reliable, setting new standards in engineering.

The Impact of Armstrong's Inventions Today

Armstrong's inventions continue to shape hydraulics to this day. The weight accumulator and his other developments form the foundation of modern hydraulic systems. Companies like STAUFF draw on these technologies to develop components used in demanding industrial applications.

Although the technology has been refined since then, Armstrong's principles remain central to the functioning of modern hydraulic systems. His vision of combining efficiency and reliability is a guiding principle for engineers worldwide.
